Most furnace failures do not come out of nowhere. They give you hints for weeks, and those hints are easy to miss when the house is warm and you are busy.
What to watch and listen for
Strange noises are the classic first sign. A healthy furnace hums. If yours bangs, squeals, or rattles on startup, it is telling you something changed since last year.
The other big ones are uneven heat from room to room, bills that creep up with no change in weather, a pilot flame that looks yellow instead of blue, and a system that switches on and off too often.
When to call
If you smell gas or see a yellow flame, leave the house and call your gas company first. For anything else, a tune-up before the first cold snap is the cheapest fix there is.
